Learning Excursions: Education Through Experience

Summer is here and learning is in the air! When you typically think of summer learning is usually not at the forefront of your mind. However, this part of the season is just ripe for education, because it allows our students to enhance their academic abilities in a different fashion, and one of our favorite educational experiences we like to provide for our students are out Learning Excursions.

What is a Learning Excursion?

A learning excursion is a field trip with the purpose of enhancing academics by changing the learning environment. Through off-site and virtual field trips, the students have the opportunity to experience certain subject material first hand, and be exposed to many different environments and cultures that they might not be able to experience on their own. A learning excursion could take them out of the city, state, or to a local facility. The location is not as important as what learning experiences are available at the destination.

How to chose a Learning Excursion

Choosing  a learning excursion is not as hard as you think. In fact, some learning excursion can take place without leaving the comfort of your home or classroom. Their are organizations such as Monterey Bay Aquarium that provide live web cam access throughout their facility. They even provide information on the various animals, birds, and sea creatures that you may view on their live feed. However, if you plan to go off-site be sure to ask yourself these questions:

  • What will they learn?

What educational value will this trips provide? Will this tie in with a previous lesson, or will it provide new material for you discuss once you return? Think outside of the box. You don’t have to go to a place that embodies the idea of a traditional field trip. You can shake this up like attend a movie, and conduct a lesson on Film Interpretation, or create a writing assignment based on what they saw. You could even have them create a journal on what they would change in  the movie or create an alternate ending. The possibilities are endless.

  • What will they experience?

This plays an important role in our idea of a learning excursion. The student should have an experience that both positive and hopefully creates an impact on their life. We can make every excursion the trip of a lifetime, but we can plan to make it an important time in their life.

  • What will they remember?

The trip should be memorable. Make sure to research ahead of time things that you can brief them before and review after you return. This can also help their retention and comprehension skills as well.

  • Is it fun?

Remember to make it fun! Your students should enjoy each trip they take. Use the excursions as a tool to create a love of learning. Once you create a love of learning within a child, their academic journey will begin to accelerate to level they never thought possible.

Now that you have a better understanding of learning excursion take the next step and start planning a few of your own, and remember to have fun!
